Prologue

Hard to believe that it’s nearly a year since we officially threw open the doors for everyone! More on that in the coming days though. I check the Snake Eyes Gaming blog almost every day, only to be teased by that drunken dwarf! Each time I see him reclining, pipe in hand - I think about all of the exciting things that we could be using the space on the blog for: articles, campaign journals, tournament results, product reviews, major announcements, guest articles, etc. Of course we will continue to use the Snake Eyes Facebook page for conversations, announcements, finding a game, and all of the great things that we as a community use it for right now.

Things were different when we started the Blog. Snake Eyes Gaming existed only to organize events for Warhammer 40K and built showcase tables for premier 40K conventions. As you all know, times change and the focus of Snake Eyes Gaming has expanded as a result. Something’s never change though; we are still very involved with the gaming community of western Pennsylvania (events like Sci-Fi in the Valley and the Pittsburgh Comicon) and we still support great games (we just play a lot more of them now!). We are still, of course, always open to new ideas; so if there is something you’d like to see on the Blog or in the store let us know! And those of you that are die hard 40K fans needn't worry, we'll still have plenty of that (in fact I'm going to work on Bjorn and a new venerable dreadnought as soon as I finish up here)!

You may be wondering why there is a piece of artwork featuring King Snurre accompanying this new endeavor. Fortunately that has a relatively simple explanation. Over the last six years most of the images we have used were set in the grim, war-torn future of the 41st millennium. Before we ever experienced that dystopian vision though many of us grew up exploring mysterious realms of fantasy, from there we branched out into an assortment of hobby endeavors. We still remember those days and the epic adventures that we undertook; there is something evocative about images that capture that essence. The Fire Giant King reclining on his throne signifies the breadth of the gaming topics that we’ll explore together – some are holdovers from the days of our youth, others are new and shiny, and some are a little bit from column A and A little bit from column B.

I would like to close this post by reiterating something that I mentioned earlier; we are interested in hearing from you, what you like to see filling this space in the future?

Board Game Night!

Ladies and Gentlemen, this week is the start of Snake Eyes Gaming Board Game Night! Every Thursday from 6-10 we will be providing a theme and board games for people to try out with fellow gamers.

If your interested in a particular board game you have not played before or would like to relax and bring a board game with you to try out with more people you are more than welcome.

This weeks theme will be Land grab style games, Settlers of Catan, Carcasonne and Ticket to Ride.

Settlers of Catan is an award winning and very popular board game that was released in 1995. You play as a settler on the Island of Catan, the first player to gain 10 victory points wins the game.
Victory points come from having the largest road, biggest army or from development cards you buy with resources generated by the land you settle!

Carcasonne is another award winning 2-5 player game where players take and places a tiles to create roads, cities, farmland. monestarys and use small "meeples" to claim these areas for themselves.
As you claim areas you receive points and reclaim your meeple for further use.
The game ends when all the tiles have been placed and points have been totaled!

Last but not least is Ticket to Ride, In ticket to ride you collect and play matching train cars to claim railway routes connecting cities.
The longer the route the more points you earn, you also can get points by connecting cities listed on your "Destination Tickets"
The game ends when all players have two or fewer rail cars, you then count up your points and determine a winner!

Each of these games are sized to 2-5 players and take about an hour to an hour and a half from start to finish.

Come out and join in the fun! Also our Demo shelf is always available if anyone wants to try a different board game. We are open to suggestions on themes or board games you would like to see!

The Steel City Showdown: A Snake Eyes Gaming Warhammer 40,000 Tournament

Snake Eyes Gaming is proud to announce the 4th Annual Steel City Showdown!

Every Fall between 35-50 players gather at Legions Games in Pittsburgh to test their mettle against one another for three rounds of Warhammer 40,000.  At the end of the day one participant will have earned the right to hoist the Steel City Sword and claim the title of Champion until next year.

The Steel City Showdown is Western Pennsylvania’s biggest Warhammer 40,000 tournament of the year.  We always try to do something special for the participants – in previous years we’ve had random prizes or raffles.  A tournament packet containing all of the rules, guidelines, and scoring system will be available at the bottom of this post in the weeks leading up to the event.  Similarly, the missions for the tournament will be made available prior to the tournament.
